Solar Connect is installing solar power into rural community schools in Uganda. Solar power will be installed in selected districts, with each community having a ‘Solar Centre’. Each Solar Centre will be environmentally sustainable and offer solar-powered internet and printing facilities. These will serve as training and resource centres for local educational staff.
Each Centre will be provided with a netbook, printer and internet connection. Teachers from local schools along with district educational staff will be given training on the use and maintenance of equipment and the use of internet and email. COINS Foundation will fund ten Solar Centres in Uganda and expand the project to:
a) Link schools in Africa via a “cloud-based” network with schools in the UK
b) Create a model that leads to more sustainable communities by adding income-generating elements to the project such as internet cafe services.
