On Friday 9th June a team from COINS will be leaving behind their home comforts and heading to the peak district to participate in Habitat for Humanity’s Hope Challenge. The 2017 COINS team includes: Thanya Mansfield, Deepak Syal, Satinder Dhanjal, Rishi Dhir and Ghulam Shah.
A long-term partner of COINS Foundation, Habitat for Humanity operates in nearly 70 countries working towards a world where everyone has a safe place to call home. COINS Foundation has both witnessed and supported the opportunities that their micro-finance loans have brought to families in Uganda – an area that we have been lucky enough to document over the years through our social enterprise company Crossform Media. The loans offer temporary financial backing enabling families to build their homes incrementally with an agreed payment plan that must be fully repaid before a further loan is permitted.
We believe that a decent home helps to permanently break the cycle of poverty and allows families to achieve strength, stability, and self-reliance.Habitat for Humanity
Following the home building concept, the challenge begins on the Friday with building a shelter using recyclable materials that the team will be staying in for the duration of the weekend. The recyclable materials must be found in advance of the challenge and the shelter will be judged on a variety of factors, including: creativity, innovation and functionality as well as a surprise criteria. Following what hopes to be a fairly comfortable night, Saturday brings more tasks, this time to challenge the body and mind with a compulsory trek of 15-20 kilometres with an option to push your team harder with an optional long route of 25 – 30 kilometres. Testing participants in more ways than one, mental challenges and quizzes have also been incorporated alongside the physical demands of the trek and it will not be considered as complete until all team members have finished.
An exciting but challenging opportunity, our 2017 team are expanding their comfort zones in a hopeful bid to raise money – all of us at COINS Foundation wish them the best of luck.
