Australian sailors, Chris Symonds and Mike Darby, have recently taken the World Championship Hansa Sailing titles thanks to the support of Brisbane based construction software company, Construction Industry Solutions (COINS Australia).

COINS Australia sponsored the pair to attend the championship event at Medemblik in the Netherlands, where they took out the 303 singles and came a close second in the 303 doubles class.

COINS Australia Managing Director Carla Wall said the organisation was proud of the sailors’ achievements.

COINS began supporting the Wynyard Yacht Club, in north-west Tasmania, in 2014 as part of our social enterprise program. The program helps people with long term illnesses, disabilities or mobility issues enjoy sailing.

Chris, mentored by Mike, suffers with a rare degenerative disease taking away his mobility and strength. He fought back, took up “sport for life” and is one of the driving forces behind inclusion at Wynyard Yacht Club.

It has been wonderful to see the growth and achievements of the sailors following COINS’ donation of the first Access 303, ‘Lilly-Jo’, which is specifically designed for people with a disability.

After winning the singles championship in Medemblik, Chris said the partnership between COINS and the Wynyard Yacht Club was a key reason for the team’s success.

Our win in the world titles exemplifies what is possible with planning, preparation and community support from companies such as COINS. Our next goal is to work with COINS to defend our world championship results in Hiroshima in 2018.

The partnership with COINS began as a result of a shared passion for disability support and the promotion of inclusion.

COINS and the COINS Foundation have been supporting a similar program in Frensham Ponds in the UK for more than 10 years, enabling many children and adults with disabilities to become experienced sailors.

Carla explained how she will be taking the lead in delivering COINS Australia’s Social Enterprise strategies. The objective of COINS social enterprise scheme is to achieve real and positive change in the lives of individuals, communities and businesses through the support of initiatives such as the WYC Hansa Yacht sponsorship program & BIGhART’s Project SKATE & Namatjira.

By doing this we hope to influence the way people perceive poverty, disability and injustice.
